The mouthguard should be part of the basic equipment of every martial artist. And yet it is not mandatory in all clubs as an absolute must. The obvious dangers are obvious. The teeth do not grow constantly and the mouth and jaw area is particularly sensitive. A targeted hit is enough and you are poorer by one tooth or carry only incurable lesions on the bones of it. The visual consequences are usually negligible. It can lead to permanent impairment when chewing or speaking.

The mouthguard is usually cheap to get and takes over so many functions for safety during training and competition. Maybe you even got a punch in the sparring without a mask and know exactly how the feeling of jaw and teeth feels. And if there is no lasting damage, it is sure to hit another blow at some point. Many professionals would no longer climb into the ring without a mouthguard and find this act more than reckless. For this reason, we want to take a closer look at the protective functions and the area of application.

Use the bite splitter to avoid ‘bruxism’ (nocturnal teeth grinding)

Especially young, working people often consult the dentist with complaints such as damaged enamel, temporomandibular joint pain and inflammation of the gums. These symptoms are most often due to tense jaw muscles caused by ‘bruxism’. As a classic treatment, the bite splint is counteracted by the teeth pressing / teeth grinding. Although this reduces the harmful effects – the dental unit can not eliminate the basic causes.
The dentist makes the bite splint individually. This is placed over the lower row of teeth for the night hours. This prevents the lower and upper rows of teeth from coming into direct contact.

The dental splint can be used to protect teeth as well as the temporomandibular joint. However, splint therapy can only be inadequate if worry, stress or anxiety are the cause of nocturnal teeth grinding. The reasons for unconscious nocturnal oral parafunction, in addition to unequal bite conditions, inflated dental fillings/crowns are thus mostly emotional problems or stress. For the latter, psychosomatic therapy is usually recommended as the soul and teeth are closely related.

Support the bite splint with simple measures

How consistently the bite splint is ultimately worn determines whether the rows of teeth are damaged or not. The masticatory muscles can generate immense pressure, which specifically damages the chewing surfaces of the cusps. This abrasion creates an abnormal tooth position so that the individual teeth of both jaws no longer meet correctly. The chewing surfaces are thus in imbalance, which is why jaw problems and TMJ problems occur.

With a splint therapy, such irregularities can be compensated. The various complaints are eliminated – but the oral parafunction (squeezing, teeth grinding) is not. If the ‘crunch bar’ is worn for a long time, the plastic material suffers similar damage as originally the chewing surfaces. Depending on the material and chewing intensity, the bite splint must be replaced in a period of time between about half a year and five years. Orthodontists and dentists/dentists, therefore, recommend targeted relaxation therapy/exercises to reduce long-term oral parafunction.

Simple tricks for a relaxed night’s sleep

Greater damage to the temporomandibular joint and teeth can be avoided if those affected succeed in consciously perceiving and actively counteracting nocturnal teeth grinding. Relaxation techniques such as yoga or autogenic training, progressive relaxation and especially sports activities, can help to live calmer and more relaxed. Sometimes evening warm baths or a late walk against teeth grinding / pressing can already help and contribute to staying asleep.

The different mouthguard variants – double or single

On the market, there are many different models that are also used in boxing. In addition to the simple upper jaw mouthguard, there are the double models, which reach over the lower jaw. The rails differ in their field of application, the material and the handling. But also in the price and in the way of adaptation make these subtleties noticeable. Enclosed you get a rough overview of the common variants:

Mouthguard with gel inlay

This mask consists of a hard outer shell and a very soft and above all adaptable gel inside. Many martial artists resort to such a model. The splint is heated in boiling water before first wearing and then inserted into the mouth. So it better adopts the shape of the jaw and the row of teeth. When cooling, the shape remains and you get quasi an individual preparation for a relatively small price.

Confectionary mouthguard

These rails are primarily made of plastic and are relatively cheap to get. Therefore, beginners like to opt for the confectionary mouthguard. It is available in different sizes but does not adapt individually to your jaw or tooth shape. The protective function is described rather as bad or partially insufficient because the adaptation is missing. For boxing you should, therefore, choose a better model.

Simple mouthguard

The simple mouthguard is also made of plastic and is available in many bright colours. It too is warmed up in the water and then has to be adapted to the teeth in the soft state. The only difference to the first model: it lacks the hard outer shell. The whole material is much softer and goes better with a blow around the lips. However, the models deform relatively quickly and must be replaced after a while. But this mouthguard is also quite cheap to get.

Boil and Bite

If you still have braces, you should opt for the Boil and Bite variant. This is a special design that also includes the braces of the braces. So you prevent the cutting into the mucous membrane. However, the models are only available as a double mouth guard, if you wear braces on top and bottom.

Most of these variants are made of thermoplastic. These are various materials that can be easily deformed after heating. Far away, a castable mouthguard is available that needs to be adopted directly by the dentist. This procedure is clearly cost-intensive and takes some time to complete. You can rely later on the exact shape that fits your teeth and your jaw. Many professional athletes rely more on this variant.

Simple or double mouthguard?

So far, we have talked a lot about simple mouthguards, which are only placed over the upper jaw. Of course, this works only if the teeth bite firmly against each other. At this moment, the muscles stabilize the entire jaw and also the teeth do not break or are not moved. There is also a double mouthguard. He is more suitable for athletes who do not have such a firm bite and prefer to rely on double protection. However, this also means that jaw and teeth must remain completely closed during the fight.

This, in turn, makes breathing difficult. Many models have breathing vents in the front, so you can continue to breathe through the mouth. Exactly this circumstance takes a lot of getting used to and must first be practised. A double mouth protection sits much better, does not come out so easily and gives a firm grip. The models are a bit more expensive than the simple variants and have to be trained a lot. Some professional boxers, such as Mike Tyson, wore their mouthguards initially in everyday life or when watching TV. This makes it much easier to get used to the difficult breathing. However, when wearing a brace, you are dependent on a double splint.
