Comparison of window vacuum
Window vacs do not yet have the same penetration as vacuum cleaners – but they have not been around so long. But you can already prophesy them a successful future in the home appliance market: more and more well-known companies such as Kärcher, Leifheit or Vileda produce technically mature and inexpensive devices that make the classic window cleaning by means of chamois leather, lint-free cloth or kitchen paper superfluous. How these modern window cleaning devices now work exactly, what they can and cost and all other important information on “window vacuum cleaner”: you will find in the following sections.
Fields of application for window vacs
The name suggests it: Window vacs suck dirt and water from windows. For this to happen optimally, however, the windows must be correspondingly processed before the actual nipple is used, so that in the end result the cleaning performance is as streak-free as possible. Therefore, these automatic window cleaners are usually shipped together with a spray bottle, with which you first distribute the cleaning liquid on the windowpane. Then you can clean the disc thoroughly with the attached to the spray bottle microfiber mop cover, and then suck in the last step with the sucker the dirty water. This combination of spray bottle with a wiper attachment is often referred to as a “washer-in”.
The delivery of the Kärcher WV 5 Premium includes a spray bottle with microfibre cover, 20 millilitres of glass cleaner concentrate and an additional narrow suction nozzle with a width of 17 cm. Kärcher specifies a cleaning capacity of 105 square meters (sqm) per battery charge for this vacuum cleaner. All in all, a short process, definitely shorter and less strenuous than the classic remote cleaning with chamois leather, cloths and kitchen paper, in which even the drying of the disc has caused some trouble.
In which areas of the house is the window vacuum cleaner used?
Actually, in all, because windows are usually spread over the whole house. Although there are not always large windows in the basement, glass doors and other smooth surfaces can also be found there. Ultimately it is irrelevant whether there is a window on the ground floor or in the attic, it must be reasonably easy to clean for cleaning. If this is not the case – such as In a conservatory, in which the roof is glazed – window vacs can still be used well, since you can buy for most a so-called “telescopic pole”, which in the battery-window vacuum cleaner from Kärcher example. extend to 2 meters. In most cases, however, you will be able to comfortably reach all window surfaces of a household without a telescopic rod with the hand-guided suction.
Some window vacs are supplied with a telescopic pole (for example the Leifheit 51147) or this is available as an optional accessory. This makes it possible to clean hard-to-reach areas with the window vacuum. Window suction devices are not only used on windows, but also on glass tables, glass doors, mirrors, shower cubicles or tiles, you can even use these devices to clean all smooth and watertight surfaces (eg for the walls and the floor of bathroom or toilet).
As with any electrical device, it also creates a certain noise in the battery-powered window vacuum, which varies depending on the manufacturer and model. The WV5 Premium from Kärcher is the test winner of Stiftung Warentest in the window vacuum test of 04/2019. The examiners attest to this model a particularly quiet way of working.
Use of cleaning concentrates
Some manufacturers (such as Kärcher) together with the window vacuum always deliver a bottle of cleaning fluid. With others, one must buy these separately. Which type of glass cleaner you use now, whether, from the manufacturer of the window vacuum or another company, the window vacuum cleaner does not matter in the end: he anyway sucks everything that you offer him. For the user of the device, it is sufficient to know that the glass cleaner liquids that are supplied together with the window vacuum are all comparable to a conventional glass cleaner.
So you can easily use in the spray bottle a detergent liquid from Leifheit if you then sucks with a vacuum cleaner from Kärcher the liquid. First, the glass surface should be sprayed with a cleaning liquid. Often this is already part of the scope of delivery of the window cleaner.
Special cleaning concentrates also help to remove stubborn dirt.
In addition to the normal glass cleaner liquid, which is supplied as standard with the Kärcher vacuum cleaners, this company also offers a so-called “window cleaner concentrate” in a tear-off pack. This concentrate is used for particularly stubborn soiling of a window. The dirt dissolves much more easily from the glass when using the concentrate.
What should one pay attention to when cleaning?
The cleaning of a window with the aid of a window vacuum takes place in two steps: first, the glass surface is processed using the cleaning liquid with the microfibre mop cover of the spray bottle. This first part of the window cleaning should not be underestimated: it can take a little longer, depending on which type of dirt and how much of it is waiting for the cleaning on the windows.
If you have now completely dissolved the dirt on the disc, so the processed window surface is sucked in the 2nd step of the window suction, i. the dirty water incl. The cleaning agent dissolved therein is detected by the rubber band of the nipple and sucked by the negative air pressure generated in the container for the dirty water.
As a rule, you will move the nipple with the rubber lip from top to bottom over the surface to be sucked. You can also move the nipple transversely or even over the head, but should always think of one thing: the movement must always be in the direction of the lower end of the device, never in the direction of the tip of the nipple – in this case, the dirty water would yes over and not drain under the rubber lip, with unpleasant consequences for the operator!
When vacuuming the dirty water, you should pay attention to move the rubber lip from top to bottom over the glass or window surface. For hard-to-reach areas, a narrow squeegee is an advantage, which is included in some models.
Because of the built-in suction, this suction process now requires a total of much less time than wiping by hand – which is one of the main advantages of the window vacuum over the classic window cleaning.
Another advantage of some window vacuum cleaner from our comparison table is the presence of two different suction cups: one wide and one narrow suction lip can facilitate suction, the narrower e.g. for smaller or hard to reach areas. For example, the premium version of the Kärcher devices (ie the WV5 and the WV2, each with the suffix “Premium”) is always equipped with an additional suction nozzle.
Equipment and accessories
The most important accessory of a window vacuum is the cleaner, consisting of spray bottle and microfibre cloth. Not always the cleaning liquid is included, then you have to buy this. But everything together, so spray bottle, cleaning fluid and microfiber cloth are essential accessories for a functioning window cleaning system. However: even if all this belongs together, it is often offered individually. The cleaning fluid is consumed at some point, the microfiber cloth worn so that they must be replaced with new parts.
An important accessory of a window vacuum is, of course, the battery. In most cases, the window cleaning devices in our comparison table are equipped with a lithium-ion battery. These have (almost) no self-discharge, a longer life and no memory effect compared to the NiCd and NiMh batteries. H. no capacity drop due to frequent partial discharges.
The majority of window cleaning devices have a modern lithium-ion battery, which guarantees a long life. The model WV 5 Plus from Kärcher shows the current charge level of the battery in the handle. Some of our window vacs are also supplied with a spare battery. This is especially handy if you have more than 100 square meters of window area to clean: then simply change the battery and work on the next 100 square meters. However, this case will only occur very rarely, for example in a completely glazed conservatory.
Also important in this context is the cleaning power per square meter specified by the manufacturer per square meter. Good equipment brings it to more than 100 square meters so that you can work with fully charged battery guaranteed the entire window area of a normal apartment.
The equipment also includes a so-called “automatic standby system” on some devices. By this one understands the following: With longer break, this system shuts off automatically and thus saves Akku running time – as with the waiting in front of the traffic light: the car engine shuts off there also already with many cars automatically.
Window vacuum battery charge
The charging time for the batteries of the window vacuum from our comparison table is (unfortunately) still a multiple of the running time. For half an hour running time, you have to charge at least 3 hours charging time. So if you really want to use the vacuum cleaner for more than half an hour, it is a good idea to buy a device with a removable battery, so that you have the option of simply loading the second (fully charged) battery after the end of the first battery life. use. The window vacuums from the WV5 series from Kärcher, for example, offer this option so that you can clean very large areas (distributed over several floors) with these devices.
