Do I need personal protective equipment?
No matter what kind of chainsaw you use, never use them without personal protective equipment. The most important parts that you need in any case, we list you in this section.
Thanks to a special fabric, sawhorses can stop the chain saw in a few moments when it comes into contact with the fabric. Most chainsaw accidents happen when the chain saw in the outlet comes into contact with the careless user. In such cases, the cut protection pants can protect you from worse injuries. A chainsaw at full speed can also stop the cut protection pants. In such a case injuries are unavoidable but amputation can be prevented by the safety equipment.
We also want to suggest hearing protection to you. Chainsaws are about as loud as a rock concert at 90-120 dB. This can lead to hearing loss over a longer period of time and can be easily avoided by hearing protection.
Safety shoes with cut protection insert
In these safety shoes, the same fabric is used, which is also used in Sägehosen. In the case of the majority of the cut protection shoes, the toe is also reinforced with a steel toe cap. Also with the shoes, the advantages lie more in the risk minimization than in the accident prevention.
Do I need a chain saw license?
When asked if you need a chain saw to use a chainsaw, there is no consistent answer. The regulations for this vary from state to state. In general, however, we would like to advise you to acquire this qualification. If you use the chainsaw exclusively in your own garden, it is usually unnecessary. But the course will give you valuable hints for the safe use, maintenance and technique of the chainsaw.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of gasoline chainsaws?
Gasoline chainsaws are the classic among chainsaws. They are useful in many areas and are used in (almost) every location. With the gasoline chainsaw, you are well-advised, if you not only maintain your own garden but also in the forest to pursue the private self-purchase of firewood.
Unlike their electrically powered colleagues, you can use the chainsaw with a combustion engine even in rain or other humid weather. They offer you good cutting performance with their high-horsepower engines and you do not have to worry about cables or hoses lying around.
Although gasoline chain saws (not only with a full tank) are a bit heavier than the others, but with the appropriate force also extremely fast-moving and can be used regardless of location. On the other hand, noise and exhaust gases are not only a problem for your neighbours if you work in your own garden but also pose a health risk for you. Therefore, we recommend you to inform us about personal protective equipment.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of electric chainsaws?
Chainsaws with electric motor are especially suitable for home use. There should be a power source nearby for use. They are not welcome in the forest and may even be banned.
With the much quieter electric saws, you will not only do you but also your neighbours a favour. Whether you are only doing small tree care or preparing firewood in your yard, you will hardly bother your next ones with the smell of exhaust and noise. With a stable power supply, a longer operation is possible than with the Zeitaktmotor models, but you should always pay attention to the power cable. Cutting the extension cable is just one way the cable can interfere with an undisturbed workflow.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of cordless chainsaws?
The freedom of gasoline chainsaw paired with the weight and emission advantage of the electric saw
Since most devices only have a short battery life, this electric saw with battery is particularly suitable for short-term use. The battery saver has the same manoeuvrability and mobility as its “big” brothers the gasoline saws and is therefore especially recommended for tree care in your own garden.
The chainsaw models with rechargeable battery come comparatively quiet and are free of exhaust gases, which is especially in dense residential areas of advantage. So if you live in the urban area and only need to do some minor cuts to remove a bothersome branch, for example, the battery saver is a good alternative.
Purchase criteria: These factors allow you to compare and rate chainsaws
In the following, we want to show you which factors you should consider in order to be able to compare and evaluate chainsaws. This will make it easier for you to decide which device is right for you and which one is not.
In summary, these are:
- tank capacity
- Oil tank capacity
- chain speed
- maximum volume
- Tighten the chain
- safety precautions
- chain brake
- Spiked bumper
In the next sections, you can read what the individual criteria are and how to classify our products.
Since you always have the chainsaw in your hand, the weight also has a role to play in your purchase decision. The saws you will find here weigh between 4 and 6 kg. That’s not very much, but you should choose a machine that you can work with comfortably.
Each of the three drive types is similarly powerful. In the final performance but still, dominate the petrol chainsaws. This is why chain saws are mainly used for coarser jobs such as tree felling and other forest work. In terms of performance, the electric chain saws, which are supplied with enough energy by the wired power supply, can keep up with this. The price and performance are in electric saws but in a better ratio since many electric saws with good performance for less than 100 euros are to get. For a comparable chainsaw, you’d have to dig deeper into your pocket.
3. Tank capacity
If you want to opt for a chainsaw with gasoline, you should also consider the tank volume in your choice. The smaller the tank, the more often you have to refuel. But also remember that fuel also has weight. The weights are usually for machines with an empty tank. One litre of gasoline has a weight of 0.7 – 0.8 kg. Converted this means for our gasoline chainsaws: At 310 ml tank capacity you have to expect an additional weight of 200 g to 250 g, with 400 ml corresponding to 280 g to 320 g.
4. Oil tank capacity
The oil tank can save you weight, as we showed you above if that’s an important aspect for you. But even with oil tanks is: The smaller the tank, the more often you have to refuel. Unlike the fuel tanks, you do not notice the chainsaw immediately that the oil tank needs to be refilled. After some running time, it can happen that the chain and the sword overheat and you will not enjoy your chainsaw for long. In contrast, a larger oil tank helps. Some of the machines on our site also have oil tanks with viewing windows. With such help facilities, nothing can go wrong.
5. Chain speed
Particularly noticeable is the significantly higher chain speed of gasoline saws, which sometimes reach twice the speed of electric saws. A higher speed of the chain also means a shorter sawing time. Electric saws are at a disadvantage in intensive work due to their lower chain speed. But that should not stop you from buying if you need the chainsaw exclusively for tree care or short work. Even smaller amounts of firewood can be shredded with electric saws.
The chain is guided on the sword (also guide rail) by the cutting material. Guide rails are available in different shapes and above all lengths. Many chainsaws can be retrofitted in the after purchase of the sword. Roughly rolled over, a retrofitted sword should not exceed a length of approx. 10-15 cm per HP. Above all, swords should be robust and torsionally stiff.
There are two types of swords:
- full sword
- Laminate sword
In general, you should always protect your ears with ear protection when working with the chainsaw. Working with these machines is never quiet. However, if you work in your garden, you may also want to be able to saw without disturbing your immediate environment. In their lower volume, electrically operated chainsaws differ significantly from two-stroke chainsaws. The information on the sound pressure you find on our site are in almost all cases after measurements under laboratory conditions.
8. Tighten the chain
Especially with longer application times, it can happen that the chain of the saw loses tension. This can result in higher chain wear and increased accident risk. To make retightening the chain easier, some manufacturers have installed mechanisms that allow you to tension the chain without tools. Especially with chain saws, which are in use for a long time, this mechanism is an advantage. With saws that you only use for a short time near your house anyway, it’s easy and comfortable if you do not need extra tools.
Nonetheless, chainsaws are no less useful without this feature, and manufacturers are also keen to make retightening no more difficult than necessary. So when a saw needs to be clamped with tools, the tool is often included or you can just use a pair of pliers that you probably already have.
9. Safety precautions
9.1 Chain brake
The chain brake is an important emergency device. It should trigger in kickback, the so-called kick-back effect, but also be operated by hand. The chain is brought to a standstill in less than 0.2 seconds and often the chain brake also stops the engine. Chainsaws without chain brake (mainly those with a chain speed below 3m / s) are sold only if they are equipped with a tip guard instead.
9.2 Spiked bumper
The claw stop prevents the saw from deflecting during use. Thus, the claw stop is next to the chain brake one of the most important components for accident prevention. But he also has a very practical use: With the claw stop, the engine block can be fixed to the wood. The user can also use the resulting lever to exert pressure on the guide rail.
