Stand fan test – the best stand fans 2019

The warm season comes and a good standing fan can make life much more pleasant. But with the large number of offers, it is difficult to decide on quality. We show what is important in a stand fan.

What is a tower fan?

Tower fans are smaller and often narrower than floor fans. The air is blown in these devices usually over the entire height of the fan. Accordingly, most tower fans are not adjustable in height. In addition, these devices are quieter, but often also less powerful than the standard floor fans. Tower fans use their own technology because the draft is not generated by the classic rotor. That is also the reason why these solutions can work very quietly.

Tower fan benefits
  • Very space-saving and therefore flexible in use. Easily transportable.
  • Very quiet even under full load
  • Uniform airflow over a large area
  • Mostly stylish and well integrated into the device
Tower fan cons
  • Tower fans rarely reach the performance levels of floor standing fans

Stand fan Pro & Contra as a comparison

Stand fan benefits
  • Available in a very wide range of prices
  • Very flexibly adjustable in height and in radius
  • A lot of power thanks to a large airflow
  • Can be easily transported and adapted to your own needs
Stand fan cons
  • Somewhat larger space requirement
  • Under full load often a high noise

How loud are standing fans?

The volume of the floor fans depends on the device and can therefore not be specified as a flat rate. Above all, as the various manufacturers sometimes pay more or less attention to the volume of the devices. In addition, the volume of a standing fan depends among other things on the operating level. The lower the level, the less noise a pedestal fan generates during operation.

A typical pedestal fan in comparison produces a volume between 60 and 80 decibels at the highest level. However, some models put a lot of emphasis on quiet operation and remain below 60 decibels under full load. However, this information is good for most models.

Stand fan with remote control or without?

Stand fans are available both with and without remote controls. Which variant is preferred depends often even significantly on your own preferences. In general, however, it is that the devices with remote control are a little more expensive, as well as this technique by the buyer must be paid. If you want to easily and simply turn on the fan and regulate it, you can access a device with a remote control. If you want to be economical and who does not mind to start and control the fan by hand, you can also easily select the devices without your own remote control. In terms of functionality, there are no differences between the two variants.

How much does a good floor fan cost?

Very cheap models are already available from a price of 20 or 30 euros. However, these are not good standing fans, but products from the low-cost segment. In contrast, the particularly expensive products of the various brand manufacturers can cost around 200 to 300 euros and are therefore considerably more expensive. It is not always necessary to reach for a stand-up fan to the most expensive device. Basically, however, the most affordable devices should be avoided, as they often cause problems in terms of performance, volume and security. In the price, midfield can be found to match your own requirements, the optimal solutions.

Ventilator test Stiftung Warentest

Even if the Stiftung Warentest does not currently have its own fan test, it still points to the test of the Swiss colleagues who have extensively tested the free-standing and tower fans in the various price categories. The fans were tested and evaluated in a wide variety of categories. The categories were:

  • Ventilation: Not only the amount of air moved but also the feeling of air on the skin was evaluated by the examiners
  • Safety: Both the accessibility of the rotor and the risks to the user resulting from the production were evaluated.
  • Processing: Stability and processing have been extensively reviewed.
  • Handling: The assembly of the devices, as well as the handling of the different functions, has been checked.
  • Volume: Operating noise at various stages of operation has been recorded.

Overall, the test of the Swiss examiners showed that there are a whole range of floor fans and tower fans, which can have a very good workmanship and a good performance. In addition, there was a direct reaction of the producers, who suggested a remedy, for the devices criticized by the testers with safety defects or production errors. If you are looking for a new floor or tower fan, you can choose between many different devices with a good performance.

Test winner in the test was also the most expensive device in the test. The Dyson Cool AM08 tower fan was convincing in all tested areas. Since the price could not prevent the profit of the first price. However, it must be said that the tower fan of Dyson could only very shortly prevail. Two other classic floor fans were close on the heels of the Dyson test and left points above all in terms of handling and noise. Above all, the noise is a plus in all tower fans and thus only conditionally meaningful.

If you would like to opt for a free-standing or tower fan with a lower price, the tests include, among others, the tower fan from Ayce and the tower fan from Intertronic, which both have a very good price-performance ratio. In the case of the floor fans, the testers were particularly impressed with the Satrap Windy B3, which performed very well for a very low price.

What to look for when buying?

If you want to buy a pedestal fan, keep a few points in mind. These include:

1. Power

In terms of performance, the airflow plays an important role. This value describes the amount of air in cubic meters that can be moved per minute through the pedestal fan. The higher this value, the greater the cooling sensation when hit by the unit’s airflow. Accordingly, a high airflow rate is always preferable.

2. Volume

Whether in the bedroom, in the office or in the living room. The quieter the floor fan works, the better. It is important to pay attention to a low volume even at full capacity. Volumes below 60 decibels are very good values. Everything below 80 decibels is generally considered tolerable. In addition, the noise can be very disturbing.

3. Safety

Safety is important. Accordingly, a pedestal fan should always be designed so that the rotor of the fan is always well protected and it is not possible to reach the rotor even with small fingers. Especially in households with small children and pets, the area of safety should always be considered more.

4. Remote control & timer

Remote control and timer are two factors that simplify the handling of the floor fan. Especially with devices for the bedroom, a timer is often preferable. This allows the pedestal fan to automatically switch off and minimize the risk of getting cold during the night. Otherwise, the question depends mainly on your own comfort needs.

5. Usability

A stand fan is not a rocket science. The simpler and less complicated the device can be operated, the better. This applies both to the setting of the different stages, as well as to the activation of the oscillation function and the height adjustment. The simpler and more intuitive the entire system is designed, the more pleasant it is to use the standing fan effectively and frequently.

6. Stability

Stability plays an important role. For this reason, a good pedestal fan should have a sturdy and heavy pedestal and therefore not tip over. However, it is here to find the balance. The heavier the base, the more difficult it is to move and transport the fan quickly and easily.
