When it comes to cleaning, a wet/dry vacuum cleaner is the biggest workhorse in the hardware store. From absorbing spilt water to nabbing sawdust, nails and other debris from hard-to-reach corners, owners rely on their wet/dry vac the garage’s task to make the raising or much easier to shed. The design of a wet/dry vac is fairly simple: its biggest feature is a large, two-piece chamber that holds water and dirt, with the vacuum motor at the top of the chamber. Most have rollers on the floor to easily roll around the vacuum. A flexible hose attachment allows users to reach into the corners, and other accessories are usually available, such as splitting nozzles, dusting brushes and even squeegees. Why invest in a wet/dry vacuum, when a broom seems to work just as well? “Vacuuming your garage floor with a wet-dry vac is a better way to clean it than sweeping it, provided you have a tough floor tool,” says Allen Rathey, former president of the Housekeeping Channel and the Healthy House Institute, and a state-recognized expert in healthy cleaning practices. “Vacuum cleaning removes soils in the corners, cracks and porous surfaces better than sweeping”.

Plastic or stainless steel? Both have advantages and disadvantages. Plastic storage tanks against dents and scratches. They are lighter but can be difficult to clean. Stainless steel tanks are usually much easier to clean and are durable but could suffer from bumps and dents. Like wet/dry vacuum work

Just like a vacuum cleaner for carpets, wet/dry vacuum cleaner has a powerful motor and fan that generates suction by pulling air into the canister’s vacuum, through an inlet port, and up through an outlet port.

Capacity and performance

The Emerson WORKSHOP Wet Dry Vac is top-of-the-line in quality and value. It has a large 16-gallon capacity, a powerful 6.5-horsepower engine, and is also compatible with HEPA filters. The blow opening allows you to use the vac as a blower, cleaning out the garage or shop faster than push brooms. It is a tough, durable tool, with a copolymer body that will not dent or rust. The owners are particularly pleased with the strong suction power and the large capacity.

Unlike a home vacuum, a wet/dry vac typically uses a two-chamber system to separate solids and liquids. Debris is sucked through the inlet opening of the outer chamber, with a hose that attaches to the inlet, helping to direct and accelerate airflow. Once inside the chamber, the airflow decreases. The debris and water outlet of the airflow and falls down into the interior. Meanwhile, the air continues its upward journey, passing through a filter to pollute any fine dust and dirt before exiting into the engine housing via the outlet port.

Switching the vacuum from dry to wet suction is almost as easy as a switch ⸺ with a limitation. You need to change the filters from a dry filter to a wet filter before this puddle of water attack. Dry filters are made of paper, which does not make them a great option for filtering water. Wet filters are usually made of foam and absorb the liquid.

The choice of a wet/dry vacuum cleaner

1. Size

Wet / dry vacuum comes in different sizes:

Mini: This vacuum can easily be carried in one hand but has the least capacity and performance of a wet/dry vac. It’s best for small spills and small piles of dust or dirt around the house or business but does not handle larger jobs.

Small: This size of vacuum is about tank capacity and performance for portability and price. Best for minor cleanups around the house and garage.

Medium: With more power, overall performance and capacity, this size of wet/dry vacuum cleaner is a good all-round device for most do-it-yourselfers to trade on.

Great: For stores that face sophisticated cleanups, this size offers the highest capacity and performance. It can hold most of the water or a much higher amount of debris. However, it is a bear to haul around and standard 120V electrical circuits can strain.

But size is not everything. Buyers should also consider static pressure, airflow and airflow. These ratings, listed on the label of the vacuum, give buyers an idea of the capability of the machine.

2. Reviews

Static pressure (SP), which is also called “sealed pressure” or “sealed suction”, is an important measure of vacs that are used to fetch a lot of water. High-end wet / dry vacuum has an SP rating of 75.

CFM (cubic feet per minute) is a rating of maximum airflow to reach a vacuum at its largest orifice. A higher airflow rating is important for vacs which are used to fetch particulate matter and other small particles.

AirPower (AP) or Air Watt is a key for rating vacs which are used to accommodate heavier debris such as nuts and bolts.

3. Optional functions

In addition to size, wet/dry vacs a few other options buyers may want to consider. If the vacuum is going to be used to fetch a lot of water, one with a tank drain option will make it much easier to empty the tank instead of trying to fetch a big bucket of water.

Shop-Vac 5-gallon 4.5 Peak HP

The Shop-Vac 5-Gallon Stainless Steel Wet Dry Vacuum Cleaner offers great value from one of the most well-known names in wet/dry vacuum cleaners. It uses a collecting bag that helps reduce dirt and dust drifts before disposing back into your clean area. Owners report that it distinguishes both fine dust and coarse dirt when cleaning – they even mention high levels of satisfaction with the shop vac’s ability to remove dog hair from furniture. The only frequently mentioned point of dissatisfaction is the relatively short power cables that can be easily overcome with an extension.

4. Fan

Some wet-dry vacuum cleaners include a blower function – either via a built-in port or a removable blower. This is very handy for dust from the corners of the store knocking or even clearing leaves from the driveway.

5. Hose connection

Most wet/dry vacs come with a 1¼ inch hose connection, but wider hoses can be purchased.

6. Wall mount

Some small and mini vacs are able to be wall-mounted. While this is great for storage and opening floor space in the garage or in the store, they are not portable in this position. It can be difficult to reach the farthest corners of the workshop, even with a long hose extension.

7. Multiple speed settings

Wet and dry vacuum cleaners are very noisy, with some reaching 85 decibels, requiring hearing protection. “Engine pitch can be annoying in single runners,” says Rathey, so shoppers may want to consider a wet/dry vacuum that has multiple speed settings. “Two speeds allow you to tailor performance, sound and performance.”

Extending the service life of a wet/dry vacuum cleaner

Filters are probably the most important factor in most getting out of a wet/dry vacuum. They need to be changed regularly, and it is important to buy the right size filters.

“Filters have to be sized for the speed of the airflow and the performance of the device,” says Rathey. “Wimpy filters allow a lot of dust to get through and back into the air. Too much filtration slows down the air and interferes with the ability to get on the ground. ” Many wet/dry vacs have pleated cartridge filters, which are easier to change than two-piece paper/foam filters, and dust the trap much more efficiently. If your model does not come with this type of cartridge, consider upgrading to a pleated filter.

Cleaning and drying the vacuum’s interior regularly is important, even as a mixture of organic soil (from vacuumed dust) and moisture can lead to mould and bacteria growth. Not only does that create a musty odour that affects indoor air quality, it can be a health problem. To clean up a bit easier, and to reduce the amount of fine particles that escape the filter and re-enter the room, you should use a dust bag when sucking dry debris. The bag can be quickly removed from the chamber, the vacuum was almost immediately ready to change suction wet (with a filter change, of course). A dust bag can also help extend the life of the filter.

Keep a variety of filters available if you are dealing with various types of cleanup. For example, use a fine filter if you are cleaning up cold chimney ashes. A general or household filter is ok for larger debris. For wet/dry vacuum cleaners that are sold without them, bags are offered for sale separately. Be sure to buy the right size for your vacuum, and avoid the temptation to buy a “high performance” replacement bag without doing your research – the most standard dust bags do a good job of capturing particulate matter and jagged or sharp ones To affect objects without suction.
